5.5 in the Spirit of the Marathon

01.24.08

After my brick yesterday, my legs felt worked, I think the bike to run element was the culprit. I predicted that I would feel sluggish and sore for my run this morning but much to my surprise, the brick was completely out of my legs and I started fresh this morning. The only challenge today was the frigid conditions. I headed out about 7am to the South Boulder trail, aka, the frozen tundra. My first hint came about 2 minutes into the run when I passed a guy who’s beard and eyebrows looked like moldy cheese, this guy’s face was covered in frost. He was cruising; a pace that definitely warranted a solid sweat but this man did not look sweaty. On the contrary, he was a shoe-in for the Frozen Dead Guy look alike contest.

I rounded the top of the hill and caught the sun just rising over the ridge, another unforgettable moment. For a nanosecond I thought that sun would warm me and make the run comfortable. Wrong, I turned onto the trail and it was like walking into, well, a walk-in. Despite the cold and growing frost on my person I had an invigorating run. I decided to forgo stretching (never a good idea) and opted for a steaming hot epsom salt bath. Double edged sword here….make sure that your core temperature is at least equal with that of the room before getting into a 100 plus degree tub. Ouch, eventually ahhhhhh…..

Just returned from seeing Spirit of the Marathon - motivating, truthful, validating and very much put into perspective that living in Boulder equals a skewed reality of athleticism. A marathon is a tremendous feat; a feat that I truly believe anyone can accomplish.

Final words, go for it always…push your limits…test your mind…define yourself.
